The Petroleum Extension Service (PETEX) is a unit of the Division of Continuing Education at The University of Texas at Austin and has been training companies and individuals since 1944.
A substance occurring naturally in the earth in solid, liquid, or gaseous state and composed mainly of mixtures of chemical compounds of carbon and hydrogen, with or without other nonmetallic elements such as sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. In some cases, especially in the measurement of oil and gas, petroleum refers only to oil—a liquid hydrocarbon—and does not include natural gas or gas liquids such as propane and butane.

A special coupling device inserted one or two joints above the bottom of the casing string that contains a cheque valve to permit fluid to pass downward but not upward through the casing. The float collar prevents drilling mud from entering the casing while it is being lowered, allowing the casing to float during its descent and thus decreasing the load on the derrick or mast.

One or more pulleys, or sheaves, mounted into a common framework in order to rotate on a common axis. The crown block is an assembly of sheaves mounted on beams at the top of the derrick or mast. The travelling block is an assembly of sheaves mounted in a framework that allows the block to move up and down by use of the drilling line that is reeved over the crown block sheaves an through the travelling block sheaves.

A short, heavy, cylindrical steel section with a rounded bottom that is attached to the bottom of the casing string. It contains a cheque valve and functions similarly to the float collar but also serves as a guide shoe for the casing.
