For me the fastest way is to go to the country and stay away from my own language spakers...if you don´t have any other options you would learn it!Or tell your girlfriend to talk to you only in her language :)

To maintain your motivation, imagine yourself speaking the language fluently and feeling good about it. Tracking your progress is also motivating. Register for some kind of exam!

If you really want to learn the language, the only way to do it is to just do it. Stop talking and starting acting. It will be a painfully slow and frustrating process if you are just halfway in it. Assuming your girlfriend also speaks the language, why don't you lean on her a bit? Start having simple daily conversations with her, watch tv series/movies in that language with her, etc. Start including the language into your daily life, in small doses, and hopefully you will begin to become more passionate about it. Good luck!

I'm in the position of needing to study a language to be able to communicate with my girlfriend's parents. However, I don't have much time, and I can't really be bothered. I have already studied many languages, all to mediocre level, and the idea of starting another one doesn't really tempt. But I need to do it - otherwise I won't be able to develop a relationship with them (I've already met them twice, and it's been really awkward each time). I don't know if anyone has any advice on this one.
