Muscovy
Russian principality, which emerged as such in the late 13th century under Prince Daniel (r.1263-1304). His successors gained the title of Grand Prince from their Tatar overlords in 1328. Even before they formally renounced Tatar sovereignty in 1480, the Muscovite princes had begun extending their control over the neighbouring Russian principalities, and by the time of Ivan IV (r.1533-84) they ruled all of Russia.
